"The world Famous"

Bon Accord

The Bon Accord is located in Glasgow's Ancient Burgh of Anderston, which dates back to the early 1700's, on a site where mansions and gardens of some of the city's wealthiest merchants once stood.

old MalabarThe current building dates from the mid nineteenth century and was was a haunt of old  Malabar, a juggler, He had two tricks in his repertoire which were favourites with the children and crowds. One was to throw a ball high into the air and catch it in a cup balanced on his forehead. The second was to pull yards and yards of coloured ribbon from his mouth.

The building was first used as a stable for the horses of neighbouring residents and tradesmen.
By 1870 the property was converted for the use of the many trades people who were to run their business from 153 North Street over the years, including Miss Russell (dressmaker), John Glen (painter) and J.R. Milne who sold bathtubs from 1884 to the 1930's.

However 153 North Street was home to a succession of hairdressers with wonderful names like Oswald Ploettner
Between 1930 and the mid '60s more businesses occupied the premises including a service engineer for 'domestic appliances'. By the late '60s however the area was changed beyond all recognition with the coming of the Motorway which was built parallel to North Street as it cut its way through the city.

By 1973 the Bon Accord was born and became the mecca for Glasgow's real ale community throughout the seventies, buoyed by renewed interest in Scottish folk music, history and politics and the nascent Real Ale revival.

The bon accord is one of the most highly regarded pubs in Scotland with a legacy that stretches back to the real ale revival of 30 years ago.

When Paul McDonagh took over in 2001 the business was at a  low ebb with only half the available real ale pumps in use and a mere eight whiskys on offer.

In just eight years the business has been completely reinvigorated, now over 800 different varieties of ale are served every year and the gantry displays over 250 bottles of malt whisky; while a multitude of industry and consumer awards hang on the walls.

Staff attend training at auchentoshan distillery and many more to encourage and develop their whisky knowledge so as to be able to understand a customers tastes and make appropriate recommendations.

As a result a malt culture has been inspired and nurtured at the bon accord with the range growing organically perhaps a bottle acquired at a distillery trip a customer request or particular tasting night discovery have found their way on to the gantry and become firm favourites this is our whisky policy.

The bon accord has been runner up Malt whisky bar of the year 2004 2007 2008 &2009 at the sltn awards
